Well, let me tell you, that basketball pole height, it’s somethin’ else. I seen them puttin’ up those poles, and they’re real tall, you know? They say it’s gotta be ten feet high. Ten feet! Can you believe that? That’s higher than the roof on my old shed!

They call it “regulation” or somethin’. Means it’s the rule. Gotta be ten feet for the big kids, 12 years old and up. Even them big shot basketball players on the TV, they use the same ten feet. Imagine that! My grandson, he’s only ten, he’s tryin’ to shoot at one of them, but, well, he got some years to go.
Why Ten Feet?
I heard someone say it’s always been that way. Since way back when that fella, Naismith, cooked up this whole basketball thing. Back in, uh, 1891, I think it was. He used peach baskets. Can you imagine? Peach baskets! And they hung ’em up high, ’bout ten feet, I reckon. Just like how they put the pole on those baskets nowadays.
They say it makes the game more excitin’, havin’ it that high up. Gotta jump real good to get that ball in the hoop. Makes it a challenge, you see. And they want it the same everywhere, so everyone’s playin’ the same game. From the schoolyard to them fancy arenas.
What Kinda Pole You Need?
Now, if you’re thinkin’ of gettin’ one of these basketball things for your yard, there’s a few things you gotta know. I ain’t no expert, but I heard a thing or two. They got different kinds, you know?
- The pole size: They say the bigger the pole, the better. I guess it is sturdier that way. But they also come as small as 2.75 inches!
- Backboard size: You see those big boards behind the hoop? They come in different sizes, too. Not sure what they mean, but the man at the store said they can be important.
There’s this one brand, “Goalrilla” or somethin’. They seem to be popular. And another one called “Goalsetter”. They got all sorts of these basketball hoops. They are good for your family, I guess, if you want to buy one. You can just ask the store, they will tell you, I am sure. It is really a good game.

Gettin’ the Right One
So, how do you pick the right one? Well, I guess it depends on how much space you got and how much money you wanna spend. Those big ones, they cost a pretty penny, I’ll tell ya. And you gotta make sure you got enough room to put it up, too.
They say it’s important to get a good one, though. One that’ll last. ‘Cause you don’t want it fallin’ down on ya, do ya? That’d be a mess. Especially with the little ones runnin’ around.
I seen them puttin’ up these basketball poles all over the place. In the parks, at the schools, even in people’s driveways. It’s a popular game, that’s for sure. Keeps the kids outta trouble, I suppose. Better than them sittin’ around watchin’ that TV all day.
Well, I reckon that’s all I know about that basketball pole height. It’s a ten-foot thing, that’s the main part. And it’s been that way for a long, long time. If you’re thinkin’ of gettin’ one, just make sure you get a good one. And watch out for those little ones! They like to run around under those things. Wouldn’t want no accidents, now would we? Just like that Naismith fella had it in mind, way back when. Ten feet. Who woulda thought?
