Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to bake something special for my little nephew’s birthday. He’s totally crazy about basketball, like, seriously obsessed. So I thought, why not combine his love for the game with a cake? That’s how I ended up making a basketball birthday cake.

First off, I gathered all the ingredients. I needed the usual stuff, you know, flour, sugar, eggs, and all that jazz. But then I also got some orange and black food coloring. I mean, it’s gotta look like a basketball, right?
Then, I started baking. I whipped up two round cakes. One a bit bigger than the other. The bigger one, I dyed orange. I figured that would be the main part of the basketball. I baked them until a toothpick came out clean – the usual test.
- Mix dry ingredients in one bowl.
- Combine wet ingredients in another.
- Gradually add the dry to the wet, mixing until just combined.
- Divide the batter and add orange food coloring to the larger portion.
- Pour into prepared pans and bake.
While the cakes were cooling, I made some buttercream frosting. I kept some white, but dyed most of it orange and a bit of it black. That black frosting was a bit of a pain to get right, but we got there eventually!
Once the cakes were cool, I got to work. I leveled the tops so they would sit flat. Then I slapped some orange frosting on the bigger cake, and stacked the smaller, plain cake on top. I frosted that one white. Then came the tricky part.
Decorating Time!
I used the black frosting to draw those classic basketball lines on the orange cake. It was a bit messy, but hey, it’s homemade! I then piped some more black frosting to make a “Happy Birthday” message and his age. I even found some basketball-shaped sprinkles to add a little extra something.
The whole thing was a bit of a challenge, not gonna lie. But seeing the look on my nephew’s face when he saw the cake? Totally worth it. He was over the moon! And the cake? Well, let’s just say it didn’t last long. It was a slam dunk, if I do say so myself!
If you are looking for making a cake for your little boy’s birthday, I strongly recommend you to have a try. It will be a big surprise for them.
